Meet Oak Pointe's Speech Therapy Team: Emily
May 18, 2020Baltic, Ohio - The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) explains that "Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment." Speech therapists in long term care facilities work with patients to improve their ability to communicate through the use of their voices or through Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (AAC), develop strategies to improve memory skills, help improve swallow abilities, and are an important part of the rehabilitation process for many residents.
Speech therapists work with a variety of diagnoses, including dementia & Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke patients, traumatic brain injury victims, and so many others! To raise awareness for the role of speech therapy in nursing facilities, our speech therapist and therapy team will be providing staff members with tips about how to know when it's time to refer to the speech therapist - and they'll have a chance to win prizes all month long!
Our speech therapist here at Oak Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Emily Newman, started in January following her December 2019 graduation from Kent State University and is completing her clinical fellowship year under guidance from many amazing Encore employees and mentors. She recently moved back to her hometown of Baltic with her husband and dog and looks forward to her future at Oak Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center! Most of all, she has said she is very proud to sign her name as Emily Newman, M.A., CF-SLP!
